I suppose the family is partly to blame. I had never seriously contemplated writing any memoirs – there was no time. I was busy! Then along came COVID. All our lives were about to change and I could see in March 2020 that I was going to have plenty of time. Without a project I was going to be difficult to live with. I thought I had something to write about – I was 86 years old – so without much further prompting, the pen took charge and in three months I had covered the main structure of an autobiography. Very few have read even abstracts of it, although my son, Andrew, with his wife, Lisa, and daughter, Ciara, very kindly offered to type the script from my spidery scrawl. Another son, Simon, edited a chunk and my wife, Mary, corrected a few assumptions! Immediately prior to sending these memoirs to the publishers, my step-grand-daughter, Natalie Davidson, willingly assembled the documents. I am indebted to them all. There are two Parts, each recalling events respectively from my two marriages. A few statistics in the Appendices are not to be studiously read but add substance to events in the main text. In the end, I thoroughly enjoyed the exercise – after all there must be some vanity in writing about oneself
